Part 4: Building a 1:12 scale dollhouse: The Laurel Kit by Greenleaf

on Mon, 11/02/2015 - 8:57pm

Flooring for the first two floors

You've probably already noticed some of the flooring, so here is a post on how it was made and installed.

Note: I was impatient to get to this part, so I haven't even finished building the rest of the house yet (the roof, porch, and railings). XD

Part 3: Building a 1:12 scale dollhouse: The Laurel Kit by Greenleaf

on Mon, 11/02/2015 - 8:12pm

Changing the Stairs

The way the kit is designed, the stairs go in facing the front of the house, which means the side that usually faces you shows the boring backs of the stairs. I had originally covered the backs of the stairs with cereal box cardboard, but it wasn't quite sturdy enough. It also bothered me that the stairs still needed some work to look nice, and decided to turn them around. It took some finagling but wasn't too difficult.

Building the House Structure

Part one included information about the dollhouse kit and the other supplies I acquired to finish it.

In this post, I'll talk a bit about assembling the house itself.  It went quite quickly after all the fussy trim and window pieces.

Part 1: Building a 1:12 scale dollhouse: The Laurel Kit by Greenleaf

on Mon, 11/02/2015 - 3:55pm

I've been collecting and making 1:12 scale dollhouse miniatures for years, but had never had a chance to buy or build a dollhouse.  I finally purchased this very reasonable dollhouse kit, the Laurel by Greenleaf, which can be found across the internet for sale at a very reasonable price. I'll be posting a several-part series of blog posts on building and outfitting this cute house.

Small Space Living (in a real apartment)

on Mon, 01/19/2015 - 7:54pm

About seven months ago, I downsized pretty drastically into a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment of 961 square feet. While we're not in "tiny home" territory here, I think I've got some great organizing tips for living in smaller spaces. (Read more)

Testing Homemade Cleaning Products

on Mon, 07/07/2014 - 3:22pm

I don't know about you, but I often see lots of recipes on Pinterest for homemade cleaning supplies and the like. They are often posted on other people's blogs, and they've usually already been using them.  But, I've noticed some of the recipes are unduly complicated, or have weird, hard-to-find ingredients.  I've started collecting and using the simpler recipes, and here's what I've made so far, and what I think.

Bathroom Organization Ideas

on Mon, 07/07/2014 - 2:44pm

About a month ago, I moved into a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment and have been working on making it my own.  You'll be seeing lots of posts to that effect coming up!

In the master bathroom, the vanity came with this weird space under the counter.

Build your own headboard (with reading lamps!)

on Mon, 02/24/2014 - 9:03am

Recently my friend and I built a queen-sized platform bed for my new Tempur-Pedic mattress.  I haven't posted that build yet!  But this past weekend, I made a headboard for it, and I wanted to go ahead and show you how I did it.  It really wasn't very difficult!  You may need a second person for some of it, but I was able to do most of it myself.

Jazz up an old desk

on Fri, 02/14/2014 - 3:11pm

I work from home, and use a hand-me-down desk.  It's small, but solid wood and kinda cute.  I decided to freshen it up with a new color and hardware.

I love wrapping presents.  Something about crisp paper folds is very soothing to me.  And I just really enjoy making a pretty surprise for someone.  If you tend to end up with a crumpled mess of a present when you try to wrap, my video should help.

on Sun, 11/24/2013 - 9:38pm

Every year I make my holiday cards, and one of the fun things to make is an embroidered card.  I love to embroider, but you don't have to know embroidery for this project.  I'll teach you the basics.  You can create a cute, fun, special card for a friend, or for everyone on your mailing list.  But, if you don't want to embroider your own, I've included a printable card & envelope so you can "cheat."  :)

Fix the Small Stuff This Winter

on Tue, 11/19/2013 - 9:48am

Colder weather is here, which means most of us are spending more time indoors.  It's a great time to fix the small things around the house you've been letting slide.

Installing a Pet Door

on Sun, 11/17/2013 - 7:59pm

I've recently decided to let/make my two cats spend more time outside on the screened porch.  To make it easier for them to go in and out, we wanted to put in a cat door.  I got this one at the hardware store and we spent an afternoon installing it and sanding the door smooth for painting.

How To: Make a good To-Do List

on Wed, 11/13/2013 - 10:04pm

If you're anything like me, you love to make lists.  Or, you might need to make more lists to keep track of everything you need to accomplish. It might seem like a no-brainer, but making a good to-do list is a bit trickier than you might think.

An easy mistake to make is writing lists that are too general; the individual items too vague.  Crossing even one item off the list therefore becomes really intimidating.  I have some tips on making better lists, and a free printable to-do list for some inspiration.

Filing Cabinet Makeover

on Thu, 08/15/2013 - 1:56pm

I moved in with some friends this past summer, and started telecommuting for my web editor job (which is fabulous, by the way).  I have a small home office, and needed some filing storage.  My friends had an old two drawer filing cabinet they didn't need, so I decided to use it.  But, it was pretty scratched and had a lot of rust.  I wanted to make it look nicer.

I'm back!

on Tue, 06/25/2013 - 10:16am

Good grief, I have not blogged in forever.  So very, very much has happened in the nearly a year since I last posted.

What I did on my summer vacation

on Thu, 08/09/2012 - 11:53am

I've been home a lot lately, and absolutely loving it.

See, I was laid off in late May.  I really loved that job and was right at my five year anniversary there.  :(  I am of course looking for another job, but while dealing with all the fun that entails, I've been home, home, home.

Epoxied Collage Trays

on Tue, 02/21/2012 - 9:58pm

"Bar-topper" epoxy has tons of uses; I've used it for years to make jewelry, paperweights, wall art pieces, that cafe table I posted about earlier, and lately, really fun layered trays.  In this entry I'll show you how to create your own meaningful and decorative tray.

Dollhouse Minis and No Dollhouse

on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 4:41pm

I really enjoy making dollhouse miniatures (1:12 scale).  I make most of them out of polymer clay.  I'm really just getting started but I'm starting to amass enough of a collection that I really needed a place to put some of it!  Sadly, I do not yet have a dollhouse, although I will one day build one.  Someone recommended a shadow box sort of setup. (Continued...)

Decorating a Table

on Sat, 07/02/2011 - 1:23am

I have a small cafe table that I needed to decorate somehow.  I had started painting it years ago and never finished.  It's been in our guest room covered in a tablecloth, but now we don't have room for it in there so I moved it to the porch.  I thought about doing mosaic tiles on it but I was in more of a hurry to get it looking decent, so I ended up doing paper collage and topping it with epoxy. Your Household Tool Must-Haves

on Tue, 06/28/2011 - 3:39pm

It turns out, I'm the handy one with tools in our house.  Luke is a pro with anything electronic, but most of the household repairs fall happily to me.  My "workshop" (garage) has most of the essentials, although I of course have a wishlist as well.  Here's what I think every homeowner should have on hand for regular maintenance and repairs.  What about you?
